How did "love your neighbor" turn into nationalism? This bundle traces the uncomfortable overlap between Christian faith and political power, and asks what following Jesus might actually look like outside of it.
You'll start by going back to the Roman Empire, because understanding the world Jesus was born into changes what his message actually meant. Then you'll look at how American Christianity developed into what it is today, who shaped it, and how it got so thoroughly tangled up with national identity. You'll take on the culture wars directly, where they came from and how the Bible gets recruited into political fights it was never meant to fight. You'll examine the "one nation under God" mythology and how it was constructed. And you'll close by tracing the intellectual and theological currents that produced the modern Christian right, so you can understand the water you've been swimming in.
This bundle won't tell you how to vote. It will help you see clearly.
